Flight of Five

Flight of Five

Lockport, New York

The Erie Canal has long symbolized the boldness and creativity of the American spirit, and its Flight of Five locks, which rose twice as high as the Panama Canal, is one of its most dramatic features. EAI has approached the task of defining an interpretive plan that will turn the Fight of Five into a compelling regional attraction, while fitting in with the overall ecology of the other Canal-related sites, with appropriate boldness and creativity. We were faced with a complex situation with many constraints, so we pulled apart the “ecology of problems” into discrete, solvable, and thus actionable chunks. We are creating a system using new technologies to bring the Canal’s colorful past back to life—year-round, on water and land, during the day and at night.
