Highway 36

Highway 36

The Way of American Genius

Why speculate on what’s the greatest thing since sliced bread when you can visit the home of the original? It’s right there, midway between Hannibal and St. Joseph on historic Highway 36, a 195-mile stretch that bisects Missouri and was home to a surprising array of American cultural icons. The list includes Mark Twain, Walt Disney, Gen. John J. Pershing, Omar Bradley, Jesse James, the Pony Express, Omar Bradley, Aunt Jemima pancake mix, scores of utopian communities and, that’s right, sliced bread. EAI is a key organizer in the ongoing Highway 36 Corridor initiative, which seeks to maximize the educational and economic opportunities afforded by this highway’s wealth of natural, cultural and historic resources.
